A dog chewing can be one of the most frustrating problems dog owners face. It is natural for dogs to chew , but it is quit
irritating when your dog is chewing you valued possessions. So why does your new pet chew everything but his toys. Many animal
behavioral experts suggest it could come from a variety of reasons.
- Tension - Dogs relieve tension as apposed to keeping it bottled up. Dogs may suffer this form of anxiety as a result of
you leaving to go to work.
- Boredom - Dogs that become bored will chew on anything in an attempt to keep themselves occupied.
- Exercise - Dogs that do not get enough exercise may chew in order to get rid of any excess energy it may have.
- Hunger Tension - Dogs that lack in the proper nutrition may chew or exhibit other behavioral problems.
- Teething - When a puppy looses their baby teeth thay will need to chew for the same reasons babies do. Also after the
cut their teeth and all of the adult teeth are in they will begin to set in the jaw. This usually occurs between 6-11 months
of age. During this time your dog will need to chew.
Now that we have talked about possible problems, which can cause a dog to chew, lets discuss some possible solutions. First
I recommend only giving a puppy store bought dog toys that do not resemble human items. For example I don't buy chew toys
that resemble such things as shoes. Also I never give a dog an old shoe to chew. Your dog may not be able to make the distinction
between the thing you allow it to chew and the things you don't want it to chew.
Also it is necessary to give your dog as much attention as possible. Some dogs require more exercise than others and it
is important that you accommodate your pets physical and mental exercise needs. The mental exercise comes in the
form of some type of training. Obedience training at a minimum is excellent mental exercise . Not only does it give your dog
something to do it will also strengthen your bond.
Next feed your dog a quality dog food. Your new puppy will need to eat three times a day. It will need the proper food
to support the healthiest growth. Also it is best that you do not make a big deal when you leave home or return. This is the
hardest. Most people are excited to see their dog when they return home. By creating an excited state when you leave or return
causes greater anxiety for you pet when you are gone. So when you return wait before you excitedly greet your pet.
